Francisco-Javier Gonzalez-Barcala received his MD degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 1988 and completed his specialization in the respiratory diseases in 2002. He read his doctoral Thesis on "Lung function reference values in children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years in Galicia" in 1997.  
In 1991, he was Research Fellow at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). From 1992 to 1998 he worked as Clinical Assistant in the Emergency Department.
In 2008 he did a short-term research training stage, at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Régional (CHRU) de Montpellier (France).
Since January 2013 he has been Associate Professor of Respiratory Medicine at USC.
His major scientific interest has been asthma, including epidemiology, clinical phenotypes, as well as genetic and molecular mechanisms.
He has published more than 100 scientific papers and 5 chapters in books concerned with respiratory medicine.
In 2007 he was awarded the Annual Research Award from the Real Academia de Medicina y Cirugía de Galicia (Royal Academy of Medicine in Galicia).
From 2009 to 2012 he was a member of the executive committee in occupational and environmental medicine of the Sociedad Española de Patología Respiratoria-SEPAR (Spanish Society of Respiratory Medicine).
Since January 2014 he has been a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Asthma.
In 2012 he was Guest Editor of Current Respiratory Medicine Review.
Since June 2014, he has been coordinating the Asthma section of the Sociedad Gallega de Patología Respiratoria (Galician Society of Respiratory Medicine).
He has directed 4 doctoral theses and taken part in 10 clinical trials (in 4 as principal investigator)
Prof. Gonzalez-Barcala was the PI of 5 projects financed by the Spanish Ministries of Health and Science and Innovation, the Spanish Society of Respiratory Medicine-SEPAR  and  the Galician Government.
